Welfare 2030

Our welfare system is spiralling out of control. It is failing to support families out of poverty, while writing off the talents of both young people and those in midlife. Left unchecked, the health and disability benefits bill alone will reach £100 billion by 2030.

This year, we will diagnose the causes of escalating worklessness, its harms to struggling families and the cost to the taxpayer. Then we will lay out a long-term plan to reform the system - a plan that will last long into the 2030s. Scroll on to learn more.

Welfare 2030: The process

CSJ research is informed by our network of 900+ CSJ Alliance of small charities, generating solutions to the nation’s biggest problems at the grassroots level.

Welfare 2030 will be informed by their frontline experiences, as well as the answers they are offering every day as shown at the CSJ Awards 2025.

Over Spring, we will be holding our annual Big Listen series, convening practitioners and charities on the theme of supporting people into work. We will then travel to all the major party conferences, hosting the debate as to how we can best fix the welfare crisis at the political level.
