The Birth Gap Debate
Britain’s birth rate has fallen to 1.4 – well below the replacement rate of 2.1 – at a moment when the relationship between family formation, economic growth, and immigration is more contested than ever. This event will not rehearse familiar arguments but interrogate them: Is low fertility primarily cultural, economic or policy-driven? Can immigration meaningfully offset demographic decline? And what does this mean for the future of the social contract?
Claire Coutinho MP, Shadow Minister for Equalities, Josh Simons MP, Labour MP for Makerfield, Fraser Nelson, Columnist at The Times and one of Britain’s foremost commentators on politics and demography, and Miriam Cates, former MP and a leading voice on natalism and family policy, will discuss with a senior audience of policymakers, journalists, and sector leaders.
