Matthew Torbitt

I am a political commentator, writer and former Labour adviser who spent 7 years working with five front bench MPs in Parliament. Drawing on my own lived experience of homelessness, I now campaigns on housing and social justice issues. I’ve written for The Big Issue, LabourList and The Spectator, and am a regular contributor on GB News, BBC Newsnight, Times Radio and Jeremy Vine on 5. In addition, I’m finishing a book on my own experiences of homelessness and rough sleeping.

I am a native of Stockport and was homeless at the age of 17. Sleeping rough for almost a year, I was groomed into a gang and narrowly avoided prison. After receiving a suspended sentence and finding a home, I went to university and turned my life around. I went on to work in Parliament and help organise political campaigns and champion positive social change.

At the CSJ, I am proud to be leading work on Housing First, supporting efforts to scale up provision so thousands of people sleeping rough can move into stable homes with wraparound support.
