NICK HURD ATTENDS CSJ BRIEFING
Shadow Minister for Charities, Social Enterprise and Volunteering visits CSJ

Nick Hurd MP, the new Shadow Minister for Charities, Social Enterprise and Volunteering, attended a briefing last week at the Centre for Social Justice (CSJ). Philippa Stroud, the CSJ’s Executive Director shared an overview of our work, whilst Orlando Fraser, Chairman for the Social Justice Policy Group (Voluntary Sector) was able to comment on proposals that have recently been adopted into the Conservative party green paper: A stronger Society: Voluntary Action in the 21st Century.

The CSJ conducted extensive research into the voluntary sector which culminated in 2007 with our report "Breakthrough Britain". In a whole section dedicated to the voluntary sector, the report highlighted the crucial role voluntary organisations play in tackling the five pathways to poverty: family breakdown, educational failure, worklessness, serious personal debt and addiction. It outlined the current obstacles facing many voluntary organisations such as a stalled growth in charitable giving and low volunteering rates. In the face of this, the report put forward a wide range of policy proposals to strengthen and advance the third sector; these ranged from the launch of a ‘V-card’ to boost volunteering to advocating a shift from direct to indirect statutory funding.

Nick is no stranger to the CSJ, having previously completed the CSJ Inner City Challenge in 2006 at the Living Well Trust in Carlisle, a youth and community centre that provides detached youth work, parenting classes and alternative education for the local community.
