NICK HURD ATTENDS CSJ BRIEFING
Shadow Minister for Charities, Social Enterprise and Volunteering visits CSJ
Nick Hurd MP, the new Shadow Minister for Charities, Social Enterprise and Volunteering, attended a briefing last week at the Centre for Social Justice (CSJ).
The CSJ conducted extensive research into the voluntary sector which culminated in 2007 with our report "Breakthrough Britain". In a whole section dedicated to the voluntary sector, the report highlighted the crucial role voluntary organisations play in tackling the five pathways to poverty: family breakdown, educational failure, worklessness, serious personal debt and addiction. It outlined the current obstacles facing many voluntary organisations such as a stalled growth in charitable giving and low volunteering rates. In the face of this, the report put forward a wide range of policy proposals to strengthen and advance the third sector; these ranged from the launch of a ‘V-card’ to boost volunteering to advocating a shift from direct to indirect statutory funding.
