Prime Minister endorses report

09 September 2008
The Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, has welcomed and endorsed the latest report published by the Centre for Social Justice.

The Early Intervention report written by Iain Duncan Smith and Labour MP Graham Allen was launched on 16 September 2008 and co-published by both the CSJ and the Smith Institute. The paper argues for a cross-party consensus on a public policy approach that prioritises the nurture of 0-3 year olds as essential prevention of later social problems.

The paper, described by Liberal Democrat Leader Nick Clegg as a "wake up call" has also received the endorsement of Conservative Leader David Cameron as a "significant... intelligent and wlcome piece of work."

Gordon Brown MP
"I welcome this report by Graham and Iain. Intervening early before problems develop is vital to helping all children reach their full potential, giving them every opportunity to achieve the best for themselves and then to go on and reproduce that for their own families - a virtuous circle of aspiration and achievement replacing an intergenerational cycle of low expectations and wasted talent."
Gordon Brown, Leader of the Labour Party

 Nick Clegg
"The challenge from two experienced Parliamentarians is for all parties to face the issues which confront our society, many of which could be effectively tackled through early intervention. This is a welcome wake up call to all those both inside and outside of government who want to make politics relevant to our future."
Nick Clegg MP, Leader of the Liberal Democrats

David Cameron MP
"This is a significant piece of work. If we are to give every child the chance to live a happy and successful life we need to act while they are in their early years. Dealing with the problems of educational failure, family breakdown and other symptoms of the broken society is a priority for a future Conservative Government.

"Iain Duncan Smith and Graham Allen have set the bar very high for future policymaking in this area and I thank them for this intelligent and welcome piece of work."
David Cameron, Leader of the Conservatives
